One of the individuals I support is Sarah (name changed for privacy). Sarah has a vibrant spirit and genuine love for art. Over our time together, we discovered her extraordinary painting talent. However, due to her disability, Sarah faced difficulties expressing herself and communicating her emotions. Together, we embarked on a creative journey, providing her with various art materials and encouraging her to explore multiple artistic techniques. Slowly but surely, Sarah's confidence blossomed as she poured her emotions onto the canvas. The strokes of her brush became a powerful form of communication for her. Witnessing Sarah's artistic journey has been truly awe-inspiring. Her artwork vividly reflects her emotions, dreams, and joys. Through her paintings, she has found a voice that transcends words. Not only has this brought Sarah fulfillment, but it has also allowed others to glimpse her unique perspective on life. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of the arts and the profound impact they can have on individuals with mental disabilities. It reminds me why I am passionate about our work and the difference we make in the lives of those we support.
I originally started my career with NAS Inc. as a Summer student working towards my degree in Nursing. After spending four months with the individuals supported in Community Access, I realized this was my passion. As I grew within the agency, I was allowed to watch the individuals we support grow. Nothing brings me more joy than watching one of our individuals flourish with the support of NAS Inc. Over the last four years, I have been fortunate to be a part of a support team that helps people reach significant milestones, achieve their goals, and find fulfillment within their community. One accomplishment that comes to mind is an individual I have supported throughout my time in the agency. She came into services as a shy young mother who was not very receptive to help. With NAS Inc.'s support and determination, she fought to have shared custody of her child; she attended post-secondary schooling and lives independently in the community. Her accomplishments remind me daily of how dedicated, caring, and compassionate the staff and individuals are at NAS Inc.
Supporting Emma, a young woman with Down syndrome, on her journey of independence and self-discovery has been one of my most rewarding experiences. As soon as I met Emma, I was captivated by her infectious smile and positive energy. She displayed incredible resilience and joy throughout our time together, overcoming challenges and embracing life.
One particular accomplishment stands out to me. Cooking was one of Emma's top priorities. Our first step was to break down simple recipes into simple steps and adapt them to her abilities. Emma's confidence in the kitchen gradually increased with patience, guidance, and support. She was so excited when she independently prepared her first complete meal- delicious spaghetti. The celebration was not just for Emma but for the entire team who had supported her. I have learned how valuable individualized support, patience, and fostering independence can be from Emma. Her growth and development inspired me and reminded me that everyone has incredible potential, regardless of their circumstance.
Seeing the incredible resilience and growth of the individuals we assist inspires me to go above and beyond for them. Seeing the transformational impact on their lives firsthand is a privilege. I am filled with pride and motivation when I witness their determination to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Seeing the individual land his dream job has brought me happiness and satisfaction. Our team, their family, and the community all contributed to the success of their hard work. Seeing their joy, sense of accomplishment, and heightened self-confidence was rewarding, confirming our work's importance.
I have worked in this field for twelve years, and it has been a rewarding experience. Creating meaningful relationships with the people I support and witnessing their progress toward achieving their goals is truly satisfying. I had had the pleasure of assisting some individuals in accomplishing things that were once deemed impossible, such as a man who went swimming when nobody believed he could. Additionally, I have helped develop plans to aid individuals in regulating themselves.
These life skills and experiences drive my passion for this work.
I have enjoyed working professionally in the disability field for almost seven years. I am motivated to go above and beyond for the individuals I support because I grew up with two siblings on the autism spectrum. Growing up with my siblings has taught me that everyone deserves support to live the highest quality of life. That mindset has motivated me to do my best for everyone I support because they deserve that! One accomplishment by an individual that has brought me joy is seeing them become more comfortable verbally communicating their wants and needs to the people supporting them. This individual had anxiety around interacting with others in the past, but seeing how comfortable they have become with verbally communicating with others has brought me joy and happiness.
